We all know that smokers have the stale cigarette smell on their clothes, and if they smoked in their house, the house will often smell like ashtrays and maybe the color of their walls has changed from the tar build up. Quitting smoking due to the smell and appearance is a good reason to quit, but, it is by far not the most important benefit of quitting smoking. The amount of money you will save and the increased overall health are some of the best effects of stopping smoking.
One of the main benefits of stopping smoking that the smoker will notice quickly is the amount of money he or she will save. When you are considering the reasons to quit smoking, take out a pen and paper and do the math. Decide how much a week you are currently spending on cigarettes. Multiply that amount for the whole year and you may be amazed at how much money you are burning. For example, if you are spending $4 per pack and smoking at least 2 packs a day, then that means you are burning through almost $60 a week, $240 a month, and an astounding $2880 a year. The fact that most self proclaimed smokers have been smoking for years only adds to that number. Say you have been smoking for 10 years, that means you may have spend approximately $30,000 on cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, etc.
Saving thousands of dollars is great, saving your life is even better. Research tells us that within the first 20 minutes after putting out a cigarette your body starts trying to expel all of the toxins the cigarette put in. The reason we want to smoke so much after we put out a cigarette is because while our body is pushing out these toxin and trying to recuperate from the exposure, our brain is telling us we need more nicotine. Quitting smoking can reduce your risk of heart problems, stroke, high blood pressure, breathing complications, and of course lung cancer. Even if you already have any of the above problems, quitting smoking can still help you and make these conditions not as severe.
After not smoking for a period of time your body will begin to repair itself to a point where it will be as if you never smoked. After 5 years of no smoking, your risk of having a stroke is the same as if you had been a non-smoker your entire life. The body of a non-smoker for 15 years will have the same risk of coronary disease as any non-smoker.
Not everyone is concerned with the health benefits of being a non-smoker are. Some people believe they are going to die anyway, may as well know the reasoning behind it. Although a very poor way to look at things, each person is entitled to their own opinions. Those that believe this way may be more convinced that stopping smoking is a great idea due to the financial savings.
Knowing what your motivating factors are; whether it is cosmetic, health, or financial reasons will aide you in successfully quitting smoking.
