Trying to quit smoking, for some, may feel like trying to stop breathing. Because, for many smokers, smoking has become second nature and to deprive them of that is like telling them they cannot breathe anymore. The use of one of the two types of Nicotine Replacement Therapy may help the smoker achieve the goal of becoming smoke free for good.

The first type of Nicotine Replacement Therapy, NRT, is nicotine gum. Stop smoking companies now offer a variety of nicotine gum flavors that you can choose from. The gum seems to really help smokers that have a strong addiction to the habit of always doing something with their mouth, i.e. puffing on a cigarette. Chewing the gum allows the person trying to stop smoking the nicotine to calm cravings and the chewing to help curb the physical withdrawal symptoms. The smoker only has to chew the gum when he or she feels like they need it. This product works great for those smokers that are taking the slower to quit method. In this method the person is still allowed to smoke, but, the smoker has to limit their cigarette intake in weekly intervals.

The second choice for those trying to quit smoking is the nicotine patch. The patches come in a variety of dosages and are applied to a certain part of the body each morning and removed at night. The body absorbs the nicotine through the skin in small amounts throughout the day. For those smokers that are trying to quit all at once this is the best NRT. To smoke with the patch on is risking becoming incredibly sick. This side effect generally causes its users to try alternative measures if they get the desire to smoke while having the patch on.

Whether a person uses the gum or uses the patch is completely up to them. Some like the gum because it comes in small doses. The gum allows the smoker to quit slowly by replacing several of the cigarettes they would have smoked with the gum. Others, however, like the accountability that the patch forces them to have. To smoke with the patch on would cause them to be sick and that is something most would rather try to avoid.

If the smoker uses the nicotine patch to quit smoking it is important that they purchase the right dosage. To use a dosage that is too low could cause unnecessary difficulty in quitting because the smoker is not getting enough nicotine to ward off cravings. However, to start with a dosage that is too high can cause adverse reactions that may warrant medical attention. Always be sure to read the package completely before using in order to determine if you are buying the right product. The package should say what the dosage is for.
