An important step in a smoker's life is deciding to quit smoking for good. This represents a time in a smokers life when they decide to take back control of their life, their body, and their decisions. The smoker made the decision to start smoking, but the habit forming nicotine made the decision to wreak havoc on a smoker if they don't continuously provide the body and brain with nicotine. It is important to know how to break the habit of smoking. A smoker needs to review all of his or her options to succeed in quitting smoking.
The time to quit smoking is always 'now'. However, that is just a metaphor. To decide one day to start stopping smoking is almost promised to be a doomed effort. Planning to quit smoking is just that, a plan. And, as with any plan, it takes time to form it. A smoker needs to be aware that he has many options to choose from to quit smoking.
Some stop smoking options are free and others cost a considerable amount of money. Many of the products claim to aide quitting smoking, but, in reality they do nothing towards helping the smoker actually achieve his goals. This doesn't mean that the products don't work. It may mean that the product is not suited for that individual smoker, his habits, or his tolerance. A smoker must read the specifications of each product before deciding which one to use or evaluate all the steps for the cost free options available. A product may have helped thousands of people quit smoking, but, each smoker is unique and has varying degrees of addiction and why they are addicted to smoking.
After the smoker decides which option they want to use to quit smoking, they now can decide when exactly they are going to be ready to put out the last cigarette. The smoker should get out a calendar and pick a date to quit. It is very important to pick out a date and mark it on the calendar because it gives the smoker something to look forward to. The smoker should look at it as a special day, a birthday if you will. Because in reality, a new person is about to be formed. A better smelling and healthier person that does not depend on cigarettes anymore is only days away. With calendar in hand, go ahead and plan out other events revolving around the journey to being a non-smoker. Go ahead and circle dates of short term and long term goals. For example, the smoker decides to quit smoking on June 1, they would want to pick June 2 as their 24 hour goal and then June 7th as their first week of no smoking.
It is important for the smoker to avoid negative people at all costs. Negative people, the ones who don't support his efforts to quit smoking, will only cause him to crave that cigarette that much more. Surrounding themselves by positive people while trying to quit smoking will only increase the chances of being successful. Joining a smoking cessation group or calling the American Cancer Society Quitline can also be great aides in helping the smoker quit the nasty and unhealthy habit of smoking.
