Determining how to reduce your stress without cigarettes may be a daunting task for any smoker, so stressful in fact that the mere thought of the stress that will be caused from not smoking may cause the smoker to want a cigarette! To quit smoking you must learn what causes you to smoke in the first place and decide what you can do to avoid these causes or weaken their effect on you.

If stress is what makes you want to smoke then you must find ways to relax and calm down without smoking a cigarette or replacing one harmful addiction with another. There is really no surefire way to eliminate stress completely from your life whether you are a smoker or not, you just have to learn to handle the stresses in life like any other person does. If you get stressed at work you could take a walk and practice breathing exercises instead of smoking. Adapting to the stress will help keep you from cracking under the pressure and lighting up.

Finding a hobby will also help keep your mind off of stresses of your work and home life. Your job and family naturally cause stress. A hobby may be able to calm your nerves and give you the diversion you need instead of smoking a cigarette. Picking any hobby won't suffice, you need to choose one that will be entertaining for you. Choose one that is relaxing as well, starting a hobby that is difficult may only add to your normal stresses and cause you to have the urge to smoke.

It is imperative that you find the time to simply relax. Whether that time is spent doing a fun activity such as a hobby or simply sitting back and enjoying the clouds roll by. If you make the conscious effort to chill out for at least 10 minutes it will do wonders for your stress management.

You may have started smoking as a stress reliever. Maybe you found that by smoking a cigarette your stress melted away. But, the stress always came back when your levels of nicotine in your body dropped back down. So, to quit smoking means you must find a way to relieve your stress in a more healthy manner. Eliminating stress in your life completely is almost impossible. Quitting smoking is not impossible but it will take some effort. By finding alternative ways to cope with stress you are more likely to finally kick the habit of smoking.
