An asbestos trial of W.R. Grace Co. and six of its former and present executives was recently set for jury selection in Missoula, Montana, where the Grace Vermiculite mines are alleged to have caused thousands of cases of mesothelioma cancer, asbestosis and lung cancer among employees and town residents.
Six Grace Executives Charged with Crimes

Grace has already been ordered to pay hundreds of millions in damages to injured plaintiffs, and the criminal charges against the executives include:

* knowing endangerment
* conspiracy
* wire fraud
* obstruction of justice

The Grace executives will face penalties ranging from 55 to 70 years in prison. The men are:

* O. Mario Favorito former general counsel for the corporation
* Henry Eschenbach the health and safety director in Graces industrial chemical group
* Jack Wolter a former vice president
* Bill McCaig an early general manager of the mine
* Robert Bettacchi a senior vice president
* Robert Walsh a senior vice president

A seventh executive, the last general manager of the Libby mine, Alan Stringer, was also charged but has since died.
Grace Co. Faces Hefty Criminal Fines for Asbestos Exposure

The company could receive criminal fines amounting to $280 million, which is two times the after-tax profits that Grace made from the Libby mines, according to the federal prosecutors on the case.

The criminal trial is expected to take as long as four months. More than 30 attorneys are representing Grace Co. and the six executives; three attorneys from the Montanas U.S. Attorneys Office and from the U.S. Department of Justice are handling the prosecutions case. The trial will be heard in the courtroom of District Judge Donald Molloy.
