Avocados and Health

If you know anything about avocados you will know that they are pretty high in fat content, but before you go and judge the avocado, you might want to take a close look at the avocado and how it can help your health. Yes, the avocado has many great wonders, it has many undiscovered possibilities, and it is definitely a super food. Even though the avocado is full of fats, you need to look at what type of fats it has. Yes, it has some saturated fat but what it has more of and a lot of it is monounsaturated fat. I know what you are asking, what the heck is monounsaturated fat? You think that fat is fat and that it is bad for you, but that is not sure, there are some great fats out there that do not make you fat, one of them being avocado fat. Research has found that diets high in monounsaturated fat is great for controlling your weight, because it has beneficial effects on your blood sugar. Another thing that an avocado has is carbohydrates, and most of us try to stay away from carbs, but the great thing about the avocado is that is has almost as more dietary fiber than it has carbs, so it pretty much cancels it out. But even the carbs in an avocado has some benefits. The avocado also contains a carb called mannoheptulose, which helps lower insulin secretion. The avocado is not only good for weight control.

The avocado is also good for your heart; you can actually meet the dietary guidelines of the American heart association when you eat an avocado, mainly because it is mostly monounsaturated fat. So if you are having problems eating food that contains a lot of saturated fat, maybe you should have for meals with avocados in them. The avocado is also good for your eyesight. An avocado contains lutein; in fact an ounce of avocado has around 81 micrograms of lutein. Lutein has been shown to be in the macula of the eye, so eating avocados can help your eyesight as you age. The great thing about avocados is that you can use them in so many recipes, and you can use avocado oil in cooking, for healthier meals. One of my personal favorites is guacamole, I love guacamole, and if you get chips that are made from avocados then it is even better and healthier.
