I remember growing up there were very few dads that had any real interest in playing with their kids. In my case most of my friends dads never bothered to join us in any activity, aside from coaching organized sports. Our step father was one of the few guys that ever bothered to play with us outside in our neighborhood. It was either street hockey, swimming, tobogganing or basketball. As I am know I father I can't figure out why there aren't more parents involved on a daily basis in playing with their kids.
For me it's something I look forward to I definitely don't see it as work it's fun and for god sakes it's usually amazing exercise. On the days I play with my kids I never bother going to the gym there is no need to, it is however always a lot more fun than going to the gym. Playing a sport around the house, building a fort or going to the local outdoor pool these are things I would do in most cases by myself adding my kids into the fun makes this a great time.
I am quite impressed to see that there are more and more toys that are geared towards active outdoor play. There are even some products from the wild planet that encourage you to get outside and get some much needed exercise. I love these new interactive games that get the kids running all over the yard.
I do enjoy playing a video game from time to time but there is nothing like playing basketball or floor hockey out on the street. At the end of the day it is more fun and the kids love it as well. This year we are planning on building a rink in the backyard. I purchased the lumber to build some boards and we already some decent hockey nets. Next was putting it all together and then hanging some flood lights so we could play at night. It didn't really cost all that much and I think next year we might lay down some asphalt and put up some basketball nets so we have a professional court in the summer.
The entire cost of a project like this will be less than the cost of the large TV I bought for the basement. Now which unit will bring more enjoyment to our family over the long run? My point is to encourage you to get outside regardless of the weather and play with your kids. You will be surprised how much fun you have!
