Many people find dieting challenging. But there is a "secret weapon" that every dieter can easily have at their fingertips: a positive attitude. A positive attitude will keep you working towards your goal when nothing else will. The positive dieter has a much better chance of being successful than the dieter who is critical and negative about their diet.
Every dieter has setbacks: it's how you learn from them that matters. There is the dieter who has one scoop of ice cream and says, "that's it, I've blown the whole day!" This is a negative mind-set. But the positive mind-set says, "well, I had something I shouldn't have. I must be craving something. What am I not getting from my diet that I need right now?" The positive mind-set works through the craving to find out the true answer. This not only prevents the craving from getting worse, it helps to stop future cravings. Often we eat because of our emotional troubles and discovering what's "eating you" will keep you from eating about it!
Dieting can be stressful and life just seems to make it even more stressful. There are the weeks at work where nothing seems to go right. Or we have a crisis at home. We are so tempted to dive into a big bag of oatmeal raisin cookies to drown our troubles. The dieter with a positive mind-set can work through the problem and come up with a positive solution. They solve the problem without eating and as little stress as possible.
Fortunately, you can develop a positive attitude if you don't have one. Some people are just "glass half empty" type of folks. That's a personal choice. But to succeed at your diet, you'll find it much easier if you can work at being positive. People that are positive talk kindly and encouraging to themselves. This keeps themselves going even when results are coming slow. We all know that the dieter that keeps working towards their goal, even in the middle of a dieting slump will have success.
Tips to developing a positive attitude:
1.Turn your self-talk around as much as possible. You don't have to be Suzy Sunshine, but try to talk as nicely to yourself as you can. When you think something about yourself, think "would I say this to one of my friends?" If the answer is no, then don't say it to yourself.
2.Do nice things for yourself. Often we don't treat ourselves well. We buy things on sale or we don't express our opinions. Treat yourself to something you've always wanted. If there is someone in your life that is bothering you, then let them know in a polite way. Treat yourself well and be good to yourself.
3.Stick around other positive people. It's funny but the more positive you get, the more you may realize that others in your life have a negative attitude. You may realize just what an affect this has on their life. Do your best to hang out with happy people with positive attitudes. Positive attitudes have a way of rubbing off. Warning: so do negative attitudes, so pay attention.
